JAZZ THEORY 1 & 2

Students will learn the basic vocabulary of music theory. They will be introduced to melody, harmony, rhythm, symbolization, notation and the inter-action between these elements. All students will receive a strong foundation that will help them in their writing, reading and improvising of music.

 

 

JAZZ THEORY 3

This course is a continuation of Theory 2. Students will look at melodic analysis, harmonic analysis, function analysis, roman numeral analysis, root motion, chord scales, chord structures, chord symbols, melodic/harmonic analysis and how they can be used effectively by the player and the writer.

 

JAZZ THEORY 4

This course is a continuation of Theory 3. Students will continue to learn about melodic analysis, harmonic analysis, function analysis, root motion, chord scales, chord structures, chord symbols, melodic/harmonic analysis and how they can effectively be applied. Through examples and assignments students will have a solid understanding and will learn how to apply their theory to their every day playing. Students will learn the importance of learning and understanding the melodic/harmonic relationship.

 

EAR TRAINING 1 & 2

Ear Training 1

In this course, students will develop the necessary fundamental aural skills for record transcription, improvisation, arranging, sight singing and composition.

Ear Training 2
This is a continuation of Ear Training 1. Students will be introduced to non-diatonic modes and chord scale relationships. Aural recognition of topics covered in theory 1 & 2 will be stressed.

 

EAR TRAINING 3 & 4

Ear Training 3

This course is a continuation of Ear Training 2. The emphasis of this course will continue to be on record transcribing techniques and identifying more advanced and complex chords and chord progressions.

Ear Training 4
This is a continuation of Ear Training 3, which will further the training of the students ear. Students will learn strategies and techniques that will help them identify complex chord structures, advanced progressions, and chord voicings used in Jazz.

 

BASIC JAZZ IMPROVISATION 1 & 2

This course will provide the student with the basic skills for improvisation. It will enhance the student's ability to improvise in a song and will require the student to perform vocally and instrumentally during most classes. All students will have the chance to perform as a soloist and as members of combos formed by members of the class.

 

INTERMEDIATE JAZZ IMPROVISATION 3 & 4

This course is for those students looking to expand on their improvisational skills. Students will learn how to improvise on gospel tunes, blues, Latin, pop, rock, jazz standards, rhythm changes, modal tunes.

 

MAJOR INSTRUMENT WORKSHOP 1 & 2- ELECTRIC BASS

The main emphasis of this course is in creating and developing a solid foundation for developing musicality and professional skills on the bassist. This course supplements private lessons, and it offers the students the unique opportunity to learn from each other in a group environment. This course also will look at the "slapping technique" and "bass walking".

 

MAJOR INSTRUMENT WORKSHOP 1 & 2 - GUITAR

This course is set on solving the problems that frequently arise in professional playing situations. Students will learn how to play in different positions. They will learn how to voice very simple chords to very sophisticated and complex chords. This course is also a supplement for private lessons.

 

MAJOR INSTRUMENT WORKSHOP 1 & 2 - KEYBOARD

This course is designed as an over view of the basic concepts used by the professional keyboardist. Students will develop the basic skills for improvising, voicing chords, playing in all keys, and playing in different styles. This course is also a supplement for private lessons.

 

PRIVATE LESSONS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6

This course is designed to work with the student in helping the student with his needs. The emphasis goes towards the working on the student's weaknesses and any struggles he or she might be facing in the program.

 

FUNCTIONAL KEYBOARD 1 & 2

This course is for those students wishing to learn how to play the keyboard. Students will acquire the skills to support and facilitate the application and learning of theory, ear training, and arranging. Technique, fingering, and posture will also be the focus of the course.

 

FUNCTIONAL GUITAR 1 & 2

This course is for those students wishing to learn how to play the Guitar. Students will acquire the skills to support and facilitate the application and learning of theory, ear training, and arranging. Technique, fingering, and posture will also be the focus of the course.

 

FUNCTIONAL BASS 1 & 2

This course is for those students wishing to learn how to play the Bass Guitar. Students will acquire the skills to support and facilitate the application and learning of theory, ear training, and arranging. Technique, fingering, and posture will also be the focus of the course.

 

MUSIC READING 1 & 2

This course is designed to raise the student's fluency of notation recognition and music reading through rhythm and systems analysis, drill (both vocal and instrumental) and dictation. Students will learn about swing feel and jazz phrasing.

 

LEAD SHEET ARRANGING 1 & 2

This course is designed for those students who have an interest in arranging but may lack some or many of the necessary skills to go into arranging 3. Students will learn how to create lead sheets for transposing instruments, rhythm sections, vocalist, and a small horn section.

 

ARRANGING 3 & 4

This course provides the student with the basic skills of arranging and orchestration for the small jazz, commercial or rock oriented combo. This course will cover principles of 2, 3, 4, and 5 part voicing techniques. Successful completion of Theory 2 is a pre-requisite for this course. The student must be actively taking and passing Theory 3 while completing Arranging 3. Failure to do so may prevent students from proceeding to Arranging 4.

 

WORSHIP LEADING 1 & 2

Students will have the opportunity to lead worship vocally and instrumentally in a small group setting were they will develop the necessary skills to lead in their own churches. They will be required to perform several mini-worship services, on a rotational basis, in and outside the classroom.

 

WORSHIP AND THE BIBLE 1 & 2

This course is designed for those students wanting to learn more about the importance and meaning of worship. Students will learn what the Bible says about worship and power that it is released when we worship.

 

BASIC WORSHIP ENSEMBLE 1 & 2

This course will provide a training ground for students who are at a basic improvisation level in performance. The course is designed to enhance the performer's ability to improvise. The student will have the opportunity to perform as a soloist with a rhythm section and to develop small group reading skills.

 

INTERMEDIATE WORSHIP ENSEMBLE 3 & 4

This course will provide a training ground for students who are at a intermediate improvisation level in performance. The course is designed to enhance the performer's ability to improvise. The student will have the opportunity to perform as a soloist with a rhythm section and to further develop their reading skills.

 

ADVANCED WORSHIP ENSEMBLE 5 & 6

This course will provide a training ground for students who are at a advanced improvisation level in performance. The course is designed to enhance the performer's ability to improvise. The ensemble will consist of several singers and rhythm section. The student will have the opportunity to perform as a soloist with a rhythm section and to further develop their reading skills. Vocalists will have the opportunity to develop ensemble skills as they relate to sight-reading, intonation, balance, blend, time, improvisation and performance.
